NOTICE: Upcoming Sanitary Sewer Line Flushing

Post Date:07/16/2026 1:50 PM

Dear Resident and Property Owners,,

Please be advised that the City of Nappanee will be conducting routine high-pressure flushing of the sanitary sewer mains South of US 6.

  • Dates: 7/1 to 10/31
  • Time: 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM
  • Monday thru Friday

What to Expect in Your Home

During the cleaning process, air movement in the sewer main can sometimes affect your home's plumbing. You may experience:

  • Water splashing in toilets or gurgling sounds in your drains.

  • A temporary sewer odor if the water traps in your sinks or floor drains are drawn dry.

Recommended Precautions

To prevent water splashing or odors from entering your home, we recommend taking these simple steps during the flushing period:

  • Keep all toilet lids closed when not in use.
  • Cover or cap basement floor drains and close sink and bathtub drains.
  • If you notice an odor after the work is complete, simply run water down all drains (including floor drains) and flush your toilets to refill the water traps. Open a window briefly to air out the space.

A Friendly Reminder: Only Flush the 3 P's

To help us prevent costly backups and pump damage, please remember that only the following three items should ever be flushed down the toilet:

  • Pee
  • Poop
  • (Toilet) Paper

Never flush wipes (even those labeled "flushable"), paper towels, or feminine hygiene products, and never pour grease down the drain. These items cause significant clogs and equipment damage.

If you experience persistent issues, a sewage backup, or have any questions, please contact our office immediately at 574-773-2112 or visit the City of Nappanee Public Works portal.

Thank you for your cooperation and patience!

Sincerely,

Shaun Kern

Wastewater Superintendent
