Nappanee Historic Preservation Commission Announces 2026 Award Recipients; Celebration Set for May 5

NAPPANEE, IN — The Nappanee Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2026 Historic Preservation Awards. These awards recognize the outstanding efforts of individuals and organizations who have demonstrated a commitment to preserving the architectural heritage and unique character of Nappanee.

The awards will be presented during a special Awards Night on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, held at the historic Market Street Manor Tea House (the Frank and Katherine Coppes House). The event takes place during National Historic Preservation Month, a time dedicated to celebrating the places that tell the story of our communities.

2026 Award Recipients:

  • Downtown Rehabilitation: Marcus & Debra Miller
  • Commercial Property Preservation: Pete Yoder, Ace Builders
  • Residential Neighborhood Preservation: Tom & Nancy Nelson
  • Historic Educator: Bob Riley (awarded posthumously)
  • Friend of the HPC: Deb Parcell, Indiana Landmarks
  • Distinguished Historian: Martha Owen, Nappanee Public Library ELC Collection

This year's ceremony highlights a diverse range of contributions, from high-quality physical restorations of downtown and residential structures to the vital work of education and archival preservation. The Commission is particularly honored to recognize the late Bob Riley for his years of dedication to teaching the community about its past, and Martha Owen for her stewardship of the Evelyn Lehman Culp (ELC) Heritage Collection.

The choice of venue—the Market Street Manor—is especially fitting, as the Frank and Katharine Coppes House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; and wonderfully exemplifies the storied history and architecture of Nappanee.

About the Nappanee HPC: The Nappanee Historic Preservation Commission is a Certified Local Government (CLG) body appointed to safeguard the heritage of the City of Nappanee by preserving sites and districts which reflect elements of its cultural, social, economic, and architectural history.
