The Nappanee Fire Department is seeking a Part-Time Paramedic to join the team. This position will cover open shifts as needed. Weekly hours will vary from 12 to 24 hours.
This position pays $24.61/hour and is not eligible for benefits.
Position Summary
Paramedics are responsible for providing equal, high-quality emergency medical care to all patients in need. This also includes safely transporting each patient to the nearby hospital. Paramedics must also maintain all equipment and perform vehicle maintenance when necessary. This employee directly reports to the Assistant Fire Chief of EMS and must complete other duties as assigned by the chief.
Responsibilities
- Responds to medical emergencies and determines the nature and extent of illness or injuries; prioritizes (triage) and provides emergency medical care (e.g., opening and maintaining airway, cardiac resuscitation, controlling bleeding, treatment of shock, immobilization of fractures, assisting with childbirth, etc.); assists with management of mentally disturbed patients; assists with extrications of entrapped individuals and light rescue; establishes and maintains intravenous fluids approved by medical protocols; prepares and maintains accurate records of observations and treatments; performs all required paramedic skills approved by medical protocols.
- Maintains cardiac resuscitation and other emergency medical skills and techniques through self-testing, attends meetings and in-service training; assists with providing CPR, first aid, and safety classes, and new employee orientation training.
- Performs minor maintenance and care of ambulance and equipment; conducts daily equipment/supplies inventory of vehicle and restocks as required.
- Maintains skills and knowledge of emergency medical/paramedic techniques; attends meetings and in-service training as required; maintains necessary certifications as required.
- Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Skills
- Knowledge of: safety practices and procedures; certification/licensure requirements; emergency medical care procedures; cardiopulmonary resuscitation; custodial methods and techniques; maintenance and repair; records preparation and management.
- Ability to: interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, picture or schedule form; deal with many variables and determine specific action; recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate action; calculate basic math functions; complete routine forms, compile and prepare reports.
- Must be able to communicate effectively, understand a variety of written and verbal communications, cooperate with co-workers on group projects, and work well with volunteer EMS personnel.
- Must be able to operate a vehicle.
License and Certification Requirements
- Must hold a valid Indiana driver's license
- Maintains certification in BTLS or PHTLS, ACLS, PEPP, and AMLS.
- Must hold a valid Indiana Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic license.
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Emergency medical technician advanced paramedic training with training and/or experience with minor maintenance work required.
Reporting Structure & Management Responsibilities
- This position reports to the Assistant Fire Chief of EMS.
Physical Demands
- Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds multiple times during a shift.
- The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The vision abilities required to perform this job include close vision.

Work Environment
The employee is exposed to, must negotiate, use, or work with or in the vicinity of:
- May have contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons.

- Compressed gases; to wit: oxygen
- Flammable and combustible liquids.
- Hazardous waste operations involving emergency response operations for the release of or threats of release of hazardous substances.
- Personal protective equipment (e.g., eye or face and head protection; respiratory protection, etc.)
- Permit required confined spaces.
- Is required to work with human blood or any other body fluids.
