Position Summary
The Water Maintenance Operator’s primary responsibility is to operate the Grade WT-3 water treatment plant, conduct lab tests to ensure water meets requirements, and perform general maintenance of equipment. In addition, this individual will need to be highly proficient in customer service and know how to work effectively with customers and other staff members.
Responsibilities
- Under general supervision, operates a Grade WT-3 water treatment plant consisting of iron removal filters, chlorination, and fluoridation; monitors the operation of the filtration plant including well pumping and high service pumping; weighs chlorine and fluoride and adjusts flow rates; backwashes filters; monitors and maintains elevated water tank levels; performs periodic plant inspections; maintains a DSM Water Distribution system.
- Collects required water samples and performs routine laboratory tests on treated water to determine required treatment levels; prepares and maintains required EPA and IDEM reports and records.
- Performs maintenance and repairs of plant equipment (e.g., lubricating moving parts, adjusting and changing packing or repairing or replacing worn components); performs period inspections and prioritizes work orders; performs weekend duties as required.
- Receives and responds to customer complaints; maintains contact with various regulatory agencies and other officials; delivers shut-off notices; maintains records of work completed; performs maintenance and repair of distribution system (e.g., repairs of broken water mains, water hydrants; tapping water mains for service connections and installing and repairing water meters); supervises other employees as required; assists other departments as needed; plows snow
- This position is required to be on-call every three weeks and within 20 minutes of the facility to perform weekend lab tests.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Skills
Must be able to:
- Knowledge of water hydraulics; water treatment plant operating procedures; water treatment regulations; water supply, filtration, pumping equipment operation and repair; water distribution system construction, maintenance, and repair; water meter maintenance and repair
- Knowledge of records preparation and management, and various lab procedures.
- Ability to: interpret extensive variety of technical material in books, journals and manuals; deal with problems involving several variables in familiar context; recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate actions; prepare accurate documentation
- Highly proficient in communicative skills and must be able to recognize safety warnings, understand technical manuals and verbal instructions.
- Must be able to maintain records according to established procedures and answer routine telephone inquiries.
- Highly skilled in pipefitting, welding, and vehicle operation.
License and Certification Requirements
- Must hold a valid Indiana driver’s license
- Must possess a valid Grade WT-3 Water Treatment Operator's license or be willing to obtain a license within 5 years of hire.
- Must hold a valid Grade DSM Water Distribution Operator's license or be willing to obtain a license within 5 years of hire.
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or Equivalent required
- Training and work experience in water treatment plant operation is highly preferred, but we are willing to train the right candidate.
Reporting Structure & Management Responsibilities
- This position reports to the Water Department Head
Physical Demands
- This employee must demonstrate physical agility and be able to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time in often adverse conditions.
- The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The vision abilities required to perform this job include close vision.
